Learn about common musculoskeletal injuries from Dr. Leslie Eide, who graduated from Colorado State University Veterinary School in 2006 and completed a rotating internship in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her research interests include canine physiology and sports performance. She runs The Total Canine: Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation in Marysville, Washington.

Craig’s decades of animal training experiences range from training exotic animals in the zoo and aquarium industry for show production purposes and cooperative health care procedures to training and handling working canines in various capacities for the last 16 years. As a Training Specialist/Instructor for the USDA's National Detector Dog Training Center, he has designed comprehensive courses and delivered instruction for handlers and trainers, procured and trained canines, and conducted certifications for canine teams from state, federal and international agencies. His current and other past professional positions include employment as a Forensic Canine Operations Specialist for the Federal Government.

Yosemite National Park recently completed a groundbreaking meadow restoration project in the Sierra Nevada, aimed at restoring ecological function in an area inhabited by the declining Northwestern pond turtle (Actinemys marmorata), which is proposed for federal listing. The project involved large-scale erosion repair using heavy equipment, posing challenges for protecting this sensitive species. To minimize impacts, the team employed a multifaceted approach, including pre-project trapping, habitat retention planning, radio telemetry of key individuals, small-scale translocations, manual surveys, and canine detection surveys. This comprehensive strategy highlights the value of interdisciplinary planning and detection science, offering lessons to guide similar large-scale habitat restoration efforts while safeguarding freshwater turtles.

Michele shared about working with dogs to detect M. Ovi (Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae), a bacteria affecting bighorn sheep across North America. Since current testing methods are unable to meet the needs of managers combating these outbreaks, researchers are looking for more options, particularly in the field. Trained detection dogs can offer another complementary tool for M. ovipneumoniae-affected animal screening.

Condamine Earless Dragons are elusive and gorgeous dragons (lizards) in the family Agamidae, found only on a single highly converted floodplain in Western Queensland, Australia. Megan will discuss the work that she and Evie at Detection for Good have been undertaking as part of a pilot program to develop detection dog capacity to assist in surveys to learn more about the poorly understood species. The presentation will take you on a journey through the work to date including planning, safety, logistics, ecology, access, working with scientists, detection training, and plans for the future.
